Whether you are interested in serving cross-culturally for two weeks, two months, two years, or a lifetime, training is a crucial part of preparing to go. The Church of the Nazarene recognizes the importance of training for cross-cultural ministry and provides a Cross-Cultural Orientation (CCO) weekend event several times throughout the year. We know we cannot cover all the topics regarding cross-cultural service in a weekend. However, the goal is to provide you with viewpoints and resources to help you continue to grow and develop long after the weekend is over.

Attendance at the Cross-Cultural Orientation qualifies for Continuing Education Units (CEUs) for Nazarene Clergy. Contact pastor@nazarene.org if you have questions about obtaining CEUs for attending this event. You can register by following the link above.

Cross Cultural Orientation is for adults (18 years and older) interested in serving no matter how long you plan to serve on the field. The event will begin at 1:00pm on Friday afternoon, all day Saturday and dismissal is Sunday at 12:00pm. During this time we will cover crucial aspects of serving cross-culturally such as worldview and religions, culture, communication, evangelism, travel & safety. We will cover additional information regarding incarnational living, Nazarene Missions, fundraising and partnership development, and steps to get to the field. We will also discuss topics specific to the Church of the Nazarene and Global Missions. All of these topics will be presented through interactive activities, role plays, discussions, team exercises, PowerPoint and videos. If you are planning to go on a mission trip, working with others in your local church who may sense a call to full-time missionary service or those looking to serve as Mission Corps for short-term or long-term…this event will help equip you for service. Anyone feeling called to serve for more than 90 days is required to attend a CCO.

"I believe that the CCO is so important for helping to prepare people mentally for a different cultural experience. Having lived overseas as I child, it was probably easier for me than for others, but even so...it is good to know different techniques, get advice, and hear other peoples' stories. It was a great time to be challenged and encouraged!"
~Rachel, served 2 years in Asia

Here are a few things to keep in mind as you plan to attend:

  • Housing & Meals - in order to keep the cost to a minimum, each participant may choose where they are going to stay and where they would like to eat. We would encourage participants to stay with friends in the area or at a hotel nearby. On-site food service is usually available through each of our colleges and universities, as well as local restaurants. If you have questions about hotel accommodations, please locate your event's information sheet here or contact us at MissionCorps@nazarene.org.
  • Transportation - Global Mission is unable to offer shuttle services; therefore, the best option for participants would be to either rent a car (if you plan to fly) or to make arrangements with friends or family in the area. All participants will need to be responsible for daily transportation to and from the event.
  • Dress - Dress is casual.
  • Items to bring - Writing utensil and an openness to learn. Snacks are optional.
  • Registration - If possible, please register 30 days before the event. Although walk-ins are welcome, pre-registration is preferred.
  • Cancellations - If a need arises and you need to cancel your CCO registration, you may choose to transfer that information and registration fee to an upcoming scheduled CCO event. You may also choose to cancel the reservation altogether, in which a $5 processing fee will be withdrawn from your registration refund.
  • Childcare - If you have children you need to make arrangements for your own childcare. We apologize for any inconvenience this might cause. The days will be full and parents need to be free to focus on the materials and participate fully in the activities. Note, this event is geared toward those 18 years and older.
